of CranioSacral Therapy (CST)
for children & babies
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a safe, gentle and effective treatment for children, toddlers and babies.
Babies can experience a range of challenging experiences in a natural birth as well as a complicated one.
Some newborn babies may still hold a degree of birth stress in their bodies after labour.
The bones of the baby’s head are like floating bones on a membranous sac. This allows the babies head to adjust as it moves through the birth canal.
A baby’s head is designed to be flexible and strong enough to push its way out of the birth canal.
However if a baby gets stuck in one position for a long time in the birth canal the cranial bones can get twisted and compressed and sometimes stay out of shape. This can leave the baby feeling like they have a tight band around their head. A bit like the uncomfortable feeling we get if we wear a hat that is too tight for too long. After a while we can get a tension headache.
Experiences that can contribute to this:
· Forceps delivery
· Ventouse (vacuum) extraction
· Traumatic or prolonged delivery
· Caesarean birth
The baby’s spinal column can go through a degree of twisting and misalignment during the birthing process. This can have an impact on the spinal nerves especially the nerves at the back of the head, which help the baby to relax.
Tension patterns in the baby’s head and body can lead to an uncomfortable and unsettled baby.
Conditions that can develop for the unsettled baby in this environment of tension are:
· Colic and digestive upset
· Breastfeeding and latching issues
· Tongue or lip tie
· Sleeping and settling issues
· Hard to soothe babies
· Plagiocephaly or misshapen head shape
when can my baby start CST treatment?
& mum too?
It is beneficial and safe for a baby to have CST treatment soon after the birth with an experienced, paediatric trained CST therapist.
This could be a few days or weeks after the delivery. On average three to four treatments are recommended. Sometimes changes are noticeable after one treatment.
The mother is offered treatment as any residue trauma from the birth will often be held in the mum’s tissues also. We observe as the mum receives treatment and is more relaxed the baby will benefit and also in the reverse. The bond between mother and baby is so special and symbiotic. As this is supported within the CST treatment framework both mother and baby have the potential to thrive. We also incorporate dad and other siblings into the treatment setting as appropriate.
the older child
As children grow up there are many milestones and changes they go through as their bodies and nervous systems have to adapt.
CranioSacral therapy helps the growing child and teenager navigate those changes and grow into their bodies with more ease and self assurance.
A settled nervous system will help the child and young adult be more grounded and connected with their body. Supporting them with the options to make healthier choices as they develop.
Conditions that CST can be helpful with:
· Headaches and migraines
· The impact of Braces
· TMJ Syndrome
· Anxiety issues
· Speech and language issues
· Delayed developmental issues
· Learning difficulties
